Research Data Spring – how did we do?

The first phase of research data spring concluded last week. We have received an incredible number of ideas and have been busy reviewing them. We are really excited about your dedication and the smart solutions that you have identified.

In a nutshell, out of 70 ideas posted, 42 of the authors are looking for collaborators, 15 still want some feedback, and 8 need pilot volunteers.

The most active contributors were Christopher Awre from University of Hull and Christopher Gutteridge from University of Southampton, with four ideas each.

And here is an overview of top contributions:

At last, here are the ideas going through to the workshop. We intended to select around 30 ideas, but there were so many good ones, that we have invited 44.

The ideas going to the next stage are in the listed below, in no particular order:

IDCC workshop

We have invited all the authors of the successful ideas to present their solutions at the IDCC workshop on the 12th of February in London. The workshop promises to be well attended, with a delegate list that has been filled up very quickly. More details on the programme and the aims are coming up shortly.

What to expect from the sandpit workshop?

The sandpit workshop is taking place on the 26 and 27 of February in Birmingham. This is where we hope your ideas will start blooming into superb projects.

The workshop will be carried over both days with different activities each day that you wouldn’t want to miss. During the first day, ideas will be developed and they may well change or combine with others. We have sent the authors a list of questions to consider and to help them prepare for this first day, where they can shape their own or other ideas within their group.

We have also started working on a preliminary set of groups of ideas that will work together during one of the sessions at the sandpit workshop. During this session we will encourage participants to find synergies and recognise priorities. The groups are in the table below. We have identified common themes or similar solutions or issues raised by these ideas. We welcome your feedback.

The second day at the sandpit workshop will be for pitching the ideas that attendants have agreed to go forward. The pitch will have to be short and convincing, it will have to describe the long-term outputs, plans of action and expected results for the first 3 months. The panel will decide then who will get funding and the amount. All the successful ideas will return to a second workshop after the first three months of development.

On my calendar, February is a very exciting month!
